Orange Shirt Day: Every Child Matters

Blackville School kindergarten students
Many students and staff wore orange shirts today, September 30, to support and promote awareness of residential school survivors.

The colour orange is significant to residential school survivors because of Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, six year old Phyllis Webstad wanted to wear her new shirt to Mission School.

But when Phyllis arrived to the school, she was forced to remove her new orange shirt, and she never saw it again.

According to orangeshirtday.org, Phyllis said, "Since then the colour orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn't matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing."

Students Win Signed Jake Allen Jerseys

Danica Mullin, Tyson Burns, Kohen Coughlan, Janna Hallihan
Four students were the lucky winners of St. Louis Blues jerseys that are signed by Canadian NHL goaltender Jake Allen.

Principal Mr. Buggie got in touch with Jake Allen's father in Fredericton - where Allen is from - to find out when his son would be home. Mr. Buggie then purchased several jerseys and had Allen sign them.

Today students' names were drawn for the jerseys. The winners were Janna Hallihan, Kohen Coughlan, Danica Mullin and Tyson Burns.

Allen is not a stranger at the school. He made a big visit in 2015 when students got to meet him and get signed autographs. To view that story, click here.
