High School Students of the Week

There are two high school students selected for Student of the Week, since they were both nominated by two different teachers.

Grade 9 student Abby Sturgeon was nominated by Mr. C. Norton and Ms. C. Underhill. Mr. Norton nominated Abby for her "strong performance in Math 10 and Science 10" and her "overall great attitude toward school." Ms. C. Underhill said, "Abby is an amazing student with an exceptional work ethic. She is a pleasure to teach."

Grade 9 student Jaclyn Gilchrist was nominated by Mrs. S. Stewart and Mrs. A. Moody. Mrs. Stewart said, "Jaclyn is a hard worker who is always kind to her classmates." Mrs. Moody said, "she is a dedicated student who puts forth an excellent effort each day. She is thoughtful towards her classmates and does not hesitate to help out in any way."

The other students nominated this week are Devon Edwards, Tessa Munn and Amber Hambrook.

Students Participate in Hour of Code

Grade 3 students participating in the Hour of Code
Many students at Blackville School participated in the Hour of Code last week. 

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. This year it was held from December 6-12.

The event is annually to promote coding and programming during Computer Science Week. Through different online tutorials students are introduced to the basics of coding.

School Soccer 2021 Recap

The Senior Girls had an amazing season this year winning the first girls provincial banner in school history and to top if off they went undefeated all year. 

The Senior Boys soccer team had a season full of ups and downs. They lost a couple of players who were unable to participate, but were able to fight hard all season.

The middle school boys had a good season this year, but lost to Sunny Corner in the semi-finals. The boys played great all year and never gave up when the games got tough.

The middle school girls had a solid season this year and they played hard in all of their games - win or lose. The coaches would like to wish good luck to all the players moving to play in high school.

The two Elementary Soccer team battled it out for the KD cup on October 14. Team 2 was able to beat Team 1 in a very entertaining game and they were able to celebrate with the KD Cup. Both teams put up a great fight this year and played hard in all of the games.

Senior Girls Soccer Team are the Provincial Champions

The Senior girls soccer team capped off an incredible season this year by winning the provincial championship. 

The girls played amazing all year and went undefeated in league play, earning them a place in the regional final were they defeated Rogersville to earn the first seed. 

The girls then played and beat Fredericton Christian Academy 2-0 to get to the finals where they would end up with a rematch against Rogersville. 

The girls defeated Rogersville by a score of 3-1 to be crowned provincial champions. The goals were scored by Emma Byl, senior Kensen Brennan, and senior Dakota Curtis.

Winners in 2020 Remembrance Day Contest Appear in Legion Magazine

Students who were recognized in last year's Poster and Literacy Contest for Remembrance Day, sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, appeared in the September/October's edition of the Legion Magazine.

High School students Anna Sturgeon (2021 graduate) and grade eleven students Tyra Martin and Tara Martin received senior poster contest awards and grade 7 students Ayden Munn, Bree Hallihan and Sophie Munn also received poster contest awards.

Local Legion members presented the awards to the students, including Treasurer Pauline Underhill, President Gregory Matchett, Service Officer Peter MacGregor and First Vice Joseph Andrecheck.

Viewpoint: Favourite Summer Memories


Students and staff raise over $2500 for Terry Fox Foundation


The students and staff at Blackville School participated in the annual Terry Fox Run on September 29th.

Even though it was a nice fall day for a walk, Grade 10 students Layten Jardine and Eddy Manderville said, "I wish it would of been a little longer so we could miss more class time but we enjoyed it." High School students Brody Underhill and Joshua Gibson added, "it was a little cold."

Blackville School elementary teacher Ms. Waugh said "it is such a good cause, everyone has loved ones that have been touched by cancer or some type of disease looking for a cure. The students were very engaged. They all had their stickers on, and it was really personal."


Mr. Hallihan was asked about the challenge he and Mrs. Underhill had against each other. He said "Mrs. Underhill's Biology 112 class won the challenge by getting $352 in donations while my Environmental Science class had $130 in donations. Mrs. Underhill gave her class Timbits for winning".

The Terry Fox run is something that the Blackville students participate annually to remember Terry Fox, his journey and his bravery. All together the school raised $2548.30 for the Terry Fox Foundation. To see more photos from the event, click here.

Middle School Recognition Day 2021

The Middle School Male Athlete of the Year is Roman
Stewart and Female Athlete of the Year is Lily McEvoy 
Students and staff at Blackville School held the annual Middle School Recognition Day on the last day of school, Friday, June 25.

Students were awarded several different prizes and awards, including the Miramichi Salmon Association prizes in stories, printing and art. Other awards included the Positivity Awards, the Hard Hat Awards and Outstanding Scholar Awards. 

Grade 8 student Jordyn Curtis was awarded the Most Improved Student. Middle School Student of the Year went to grade 7 student Lily McEvoy.

This year's recipient of the Ron Pauley Award went to both Jack Curtis and Myles Curtis. This award recognized students who display a good attitude toward school and do their best and are willing to help others. 

Students also received sport awards for soccer, basketball and volleyball. The Middle School Male Athlete of the Year is Roman Stewart and the Middle School Female Athlete of the Year is Lily McEvoy. 

The Family of the Year is Allan and Jennifer Furlong and Educational Assistant Lisa Sturgeon was awarded the Students First Award.

Elementary Recognition Day

Grade 5C students receive their Outstanding
Scholar recognitions
Students and staff at Blackville School held the annual Elementary Recognition Day (K-5) on the last day of school, Friday, June 25.

Students were recognized for attendance as well as art and printing/writing awards. The Outstanding Scholar Awards and the Bronze B Awards were also presented. 

Grade 5D student Allie Hallihan was this year's recipient of the Ron Pauley Award which is given to a student who demonstrates good sportsmanship and is a good ambassador for Blackville Elementary. 

Students also received sport awards for cross country, soccer and basketball.

Blackville School Graduation Ceremony 2021

The 2021 graduates crossed the stage at Blackville School on Thursday evening to receive their high school diplomas.

The valedictorian was Andrea Lynch and the salutatorian was Reese Urquhart. Pastor John Stewart gave the invocation and the benediction.

Blackville School Principal Rodney Buggie addressed the staff, graduates and their guests. Guests were limited this year due to COVID-19 protocols.

Grade 5 Celebrates with Spring Banquet and Geocaching

The grade 5 students at Blackville School attended a year-end spring banquet on June 16. They were celebrating their completion of upper elementary.
The students received awards and recognitions. Awards were given for top students in academic subjects, as well as Peer Helpers, Bucket Fillers and other areas of strength.

They viewed a slide show of themselves through their earlier school years. They had a meal then traveled to the Blackville Park for some geocaching fun to finish off the day.

High School Recognition Ceremony 2021

The Annual Recognition Ceremony for high school students was held on Friday, June 11. The event served to recognize students who go the extra mile in extracurricular and academics through a presentation of many awards.

Caleb Gillespie and Preston Gillespie (grade 12) and Andrea Lynch (grade 12) were awarded the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Their names will now be commemorated on the wall of Eagles in the gym.

Andrea Lynch (grade 12) and Keaton Walls (grade 12) were awarded the Outstanding Female and Male Academic and Extra Curricular Activities. This is the second time Keaton has received the award as he received it when he was in grade 10.


Reese Urquhart (grade 12) was awarded the Fenton Sturgeon Memorial Award. This is presented to a grade 12 student who has participated in sports through all four years of high school, with special consideration given to those who have volunteered their time to coach young athletes outside of school.

The Middle School recognition ceremony will be held on June 25.

Blackville School Celebrates and Supports Elsipogtog First Nation for Hockeyville 2021

For many students and staff at Blackville School, supporting Elsipogtog First Nation in Hockeyville 2021 brought back many memories. The school was active in supporting Renous in 2019, and Renous won that year. 

Students and staff celebrated Elsipogtog First Nation's bid in the competition with a Kraft Hockeyville Day on Thursday and Jersey Day on Friday.

On Friday, middle and high school students and staff were encouraged to vote for Elsipogog First Nation. The First Nation community is one of four finalist and voting is open until Saturday, 6 pm.

High School Student of the Week

Grade 11 student Owen Underhill is the High Student of the Week. Owen was nominated by Ms. A Mutch. 

Ms. Mutch, who teaches Dramatic Arts, said that Owen comes to class with "a great attitude and is willing to participate in anything asked of him. He encourages and hypes up his classmates during their performances which enhances the drama experience."

The other students nominated are William Eardley, Anna Sturgeon and Andrea Lynch.
