Blackville School Participates in Second Annual RCMP Food Drive

Blackville School participated in the second Annual RCMP "Stuff a Police Car" Food Bank Drive. 

Cpl. Keith Gill from the Blackville RCMP detachment picked up the food items at Blackville School yesterday.

All the students who donated had their names put in for a draw. The winners were Austin Curtis, Lilah Walls and Taihya Losier.

Ashanti was nominated because she "has been a great addition to the Personal Interest class as she can take on a number of tasks, whether it be vinyl cutting or designing with her graphic art skills. She is always pleasant and cooperative - willing to go beyond the project expectations.

2022 Yearbook Receives Excellence in Quality Award

The 2022 Blackville School yearbook was recognized with an award from the New Brunswick Student Leadership Association.

The award is in recognition of excellence in the quality of the 2022 yearbook for a school population less than 650.

The 2022 Yearbook Editors were Dakota Curtis and Jorja Donovan. Amy Walls was the Business Manager.

This is the third time Blackville School's yearbooks have been recognized. The 2016 and 2019 yearbooks also received recognition awards.

School Book Fair November 14 - 17

Blackville School will be hosting a Book Fair starting November 14 until the 17 in the library. This is the first book fair since 2018.

Memos will be sent home this week providing the information for the parents. The schedule of the Book Fair is: 

  • Monday - Teachers/students preview day 9 am - 3pm
  • Tuesday - Student/teachers purchase day 9 am - 3 pm
  • Wednesday - Parents 9-12 - Students - 12 noon - 3 pm 
  • Thursday - Parents/Students 4 pm - 7 pm

Please note that the library will not be doing regular signing out of books during the fair.

Elementary Soccer has Successful Jamboree With Two Wins

In elementary soccer action, the Blackville Eagles had a very successful jamboree on Friday. They left the field without a loss. The day finished with two wins and a tie game. 

This year's coaches were Kristen and Caleb Gillespie. The players appreciated their hard work and dedication. 

The players are reminded to wash and return their jerseys this week to Mlle. Duffy.

New Interpretive Walk a Take Me Outside Activity

There were many Take Me Outside activities at Blackville School this week. 

One activity included the new Interpretative Information Walk at the Village of Blackville Park.

Through the walk, the students learned new historical information about the Miramichi River. They also learned about the value of the Atlantic Salmon and the original lumber mills in the Blackville community.

The Take Me Outside Challenge is an annual event. The organization "believes in a future where spending time outside learning, playing and exploring is a regular and significant part of every student's day." 

The non-profit organization works in collaboration with other organizations, school districts and individuals to encourage children and youth to spend more time outside through various projects and initiatives.

The Anglophone North School District encourages teachers, staff and students to participate in the annual challenge.

Students Participate in Farmer's Market

Three students from Ashley Hallihan's personal interest class participated in the farmer's market in Newcastle, on October 14.

Grade 12 students Michaela Theriault, Ashanti Boetang and Riley Gerrish took products that the class created to showcase and sell. 

The students sold fall and Halloween keychains, Halloween buttons and magnets. They also sold custom cutting boards. 

Michaela said, "the market was a great learning experience, and it had a great outcome."

High School Graduation Celebration Held on Thursday

Twenty nine grade 12 students crossed the stage at Blackville School on Thursday evening, June 23 to receive their high school diplomas.

The valedictorian was Dakota Curtis and the salutatorian was Jorja Donovan. Reverend Graham Russell gave the invocation and the benediction was given by Reverend John Stewart.

Blackville School Principal Rodney Buggie addressed the staff, graduates and their guests.

Later that evening after the graduation ceremony, the graduates had their all night Safe Grad event at the school.

Elementary and Middle Recognition Day 2022

Students and staff at Blackville School held the Elementary and Middle School Recognition Day on the last day of school, Friday, June 24.

Students were awarded several different prizes and awards, including the Miramichi Salmon Association prizes in stories, printing and art. 

Other awards included the Positivity Awards, the Hard Hat Awards and Outstanding Scholar Awards.

Middle and High School Award Ceremony Held on Thursday

were awarded the Outstanding Female and
Male Academic and Extra Curricular Activities.
The Recognition and Awards Ceremony for middle and high school students was held on Thursday, June 10. 

Hudson Underhill (grade 12) and Layla Hallihan (grade 12) were awarded the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Their names will now be commemorated on the wall of Eagles in the gym.

Jorja Donovan (grade 12) and River Stewart (grade 10) were awarded the Outstanding Female and Male Academic and Extra Curricular Activities. 

Hudson Underhill (grade 12) and Layla Hallihan (grade 12)
were awarded the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. 


Drea Hallihan (grade 12) was awarded the Fenton  Sturgeon Memorial Award. This is presented to a  grade 12 student who has participated in sports  through all four years of high school, with special  consideration given to those who have volunteered  their time to coach young athletes outside of school.

Jace Jardine (grade 8) and Malia Hallihan (grade 7)  are the middle school Male and Female Athletes of  the Year. 

The Student First Award went to cafeteria worker Bernadette MacWilliams. Mr. Buggie remarked that she always makes time for every student and is a worthy recipient of the award.

Allie Hallihan (Grade 6) and Erin Hallihan (Grade 7) received recognition for their entrepreneur pitches during the Provincial PitchFest they participated in earlier this semester. Allie took home the top spot and she was closely followed by Erin.

Blackville Students Receive Recognition in Remembrance Day Literary Contest

Three Blackville School students who participated in the Royal Canadian Legion Remembrance Day Literary Contest were recognized for their work.  

Grade 9 students Tally Luce received First Place in the Remembrance Day Writing contest. International exchange student Ana Garcia from Spain received Second Place. Her host sister, Grade 7 student Malia Hallihan, accepted her prize. Grade 9 students Ava Walls received Third Place. 

Local Legion Branch 49 members were at the school on Thursday to present the prizes to the students.

The Royal Canadian Legion, in partnership with schools across the country and with The Legion National Foundation, promote remembrance and support youth education through the annual poster and literary contests. 

Students in Grades 1 through 12 are invited to submit their creative works, with a focus on Remembrance, through their local school to be entered into Legion Branch contests.

Dramatic Arts Class Recognized at Provincial Festival

Mr. Hache's Dramatic Arts class attended the Provincial Drama Festival in Fredericton to perform the play "High School Musi-pocalypse". 

The class received a Special Adjudicator's Mention for Outstanding Ensemble and Outstanding Comedic Timing. Some of the cast members were also awarded for their outstanding acting.

Kensen Brennan for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Camden Curtis for Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Layla Hallihan for Outstanding Actor.


High School Student of the Week for May 20


Grade 11 student Michaela Theriault was the High School Student of the Week. Michaela was nominated by Mr. Norton.

Michaela has displayed a strong performance in Electronics 110.

62 Exhibits at Young Entrepreneurs Market; $1001 raised for Ukraine

There were 62 exhibits on display last Thursday, May 19 when Blackville School held its Young Entrepreneurs Showcase and Market. Students from various grade levels in middle and high school promoted, sold and took orders for various products. 

Some of the merchandise included stickers, clothing, keychains, customized plaques and cutting boards, book bags, pet collars and fishing flies. The total amount raised by the young entrepreneurs was $6629.96. 

Four high school students and four middle school students participated in the "Pitch Your Idea" activity with panels guests Ries Van Beek from the Centre of Excellence Entrepreneurship, Kevin Gallant from APEGNB, Rob Lehnert from ASDN ICE Centre, Jennifer McFarlane from ASDN Guidance, Rachel Bell from ASDN First Nations and Blackville Principal Rodney Buggie. 

Some students achieved special recognition for their efforts. Grade 12 student Jaiden Betts won the Top Pitch prize and Grade 11 student Ashanti Boateng won Top Display/Packaging/Product. Grade 11 student Michaela Theriault won Top Sales. 

The student exhibitors were busy all day with Blackville School students and staff checking out their wares. Additionally, many people in the community came out and middle school students from Max Aitken visited. 

Students also took advantage of the event by selling popcorn and holding a barbecue. This effort along with money raised from a recent high school dance, plus a High School Student Council donation, raised  $1001 for Ukraine relief.

Showcase, Market and BBQ Next Thursday, May 19.

There will be a Young Entrepreneurs Showcase and Market at Blackville School next Thursday, May 19.

Students will be showcasing many different products. The showcase and market will be open to the public from 1-5 pm.

A barbecue will also be held with all proceeds for the Ukraine relief effort.

Grade 12 student Athena Wiebe is the High School Student of Week. Athena was nominated by Mr. Ashley Hallihan.

"Athena recently released her own novel, which is an amazing accomplishment," said Mr. Hallihan. "Since her arrival to Blackville School, Athena has been engaged in her technology project and just used GlowForge technology to create a custom arm band out of leather," he added.

The other students nominated this week are Daylen Underhill, Matthew Underhill and R.J. Furlong.

Special Design Challenge for Students

The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development announces a special Design Challenge for students across the province. 

Students of all ages are invited to create original artwork that will represent the "schools’ vibrant cultural and linguistic diversity." 

The image will be featured on products such as mugs, card, and/or stickers that EECD will share with colleagues, educators and partners in education.

The goal of the challenge is to provide students with an opportunity to create an original design with real- world applications.

One logo will be chosen for each of the following grade level categories: K-2,  3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.

The chosen artwork will be one that captures the unique, inclusive and vibrant nature of the schools and provincial pride in cultural diversity and inclusivity. 

The creator of each of the four chosen designs will receive a professionally framed copy of their work, along with a mug, card or sticker featuring their design.

New Brunswick International Student Program

The NB International Student Program (NBISP) is seeking host families for visiting international students ages 12-18 for short term stays (2-4 months), one semester, and a full school year. International students come to NB for a cultural experience, to attend school and activities, improve their English, and live with a New Brunswick family. This program gives an international experience to families and schools; opening our minds and educating all of us on other countries and cultures.


Host families are to provide students with their own bedroom, nutritious meals, and Wi-Fi, but what makes our hosts the BEST is they welcome the student as a member of the family. Homestay families do receive a stipend of $750/month to cover expenses.

Tasty Cake Delights for Easter Auction

The Middle School students held a cake baking contest and auction. 

First prize winner went to grade 7 student Lincoln Colford with his rabbit, duck and mini-egg cake theme. 

Grade 7 student Ava Underhill was the second prize winner with her strawberry delight cake. 

Third prize went to grade 8 student Bree Hallihan who made a cheesecake. 

Several students signed up to create a bake a cake.

The proceeds from the auction of the cakes are going towards the end of year events for the middle school students.

Thirteen cakes were auctioned and the effort raised $420.00.
